Why Skateboarding Is Such a Great Sport

by Jason Lorrine

The sport of skateboarding is growing fast. About 30 years ago no one even paid attention to a deck with four wheels on it. These days there are skate parks being built every day all over the world, and the sport of skateboarding has reached the youngest of crowds, the kids.

Now a lot of people have skateboarders out to be the bad people, and that they do nothing but skate around businesses and wreck curbs and stuff. But this is not always true in every situation as this is why many skate parks have been built. Other might single skateboarders out as a group of people looking to be noticed.

Now in a way this may be true for people who love skateboarding, but isn’t this what we love about so many of the sports and activities we choose to participate in? We love to try new and sometimes extreme things and we love to be identified with a group of people who all enjoy similar things.

Let me get to all of the great benefits that skateboarding has to offer for the younger crowd. First off it gets them active, and not closed in to lazy habits that could lead to health conditions in the future, such as sitting around the house all day playing video games and watching television.

I’d suggest that a teen or young adult who spends hour after hour doing hobbies that are inactive is actually in more danger than a teen or young adult doing an extreme activity like skateboarding. Children who start skateboarding at a young age learn to love physical activity and will often enjoy the health benefits of that activity for years to come.

Another great benefit from skateboarding for kids, is making friends. No one wants to skateboard, or learn how to skateboard by themselves. Having a friend there with you to learn with and skate with makes it a whole funner sport altogether.

Skateboarding is not the cheapest sport for a kid to take part in, but by far it is not the most expensive either. You can find a fully assembled deck for under a hundred bucks, knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet for around 20 dollars, and shoes from about 30 dollars. There are lots of free skate parks that are out there world wide also.

So as you can see there are many great benefits for kids to get into skateboarding. Skateboarders in general are not a bad crown of people, no worse than football or basketball players, a sport is a sport and this is just a newer one that got a bad reputation in the beginning.
