Going Surfing : Safety Advice

by Damon Gallagher

We look at safety considerations in this installment of our how to surf guide.

By being respectful of the weather and oceans, staying fit and alert you will drastically increase your safety during the process of learning how to surf.

Always remember that the ocean is stronger than you are and that the force of even an average swell is far greater than anyone can resist. Staying alert is key because water patterns will change rapidly and unexpectedly, especially rip currents and undertows.

Monitor the weather before going to the beach, and survey it while you are surfing. Some other elements to be aware of in the weather are heavy rain and strong winds, which can inhibit visibility; make it difficult to stay on your board; and produce extremely large waves and unforeseeable water activity.

Be mindful of certain hazards in the ocean that could threaten your safety: piers, wave breakers, rocky outcroppings, and sea creatures. Just because none were an issue when you first paddled out, doesn’t mean that they won’t be later, as the currents will normally pull you one way or another along the beach. Remember that not all dangers are visible from the surface of the water.

By staying in good physical shape and swimming on a regular basis, you will have help in getting out of those situations of troublesome that can arise. Any and all exercise that maintains and builds stamina and strength is advised.

Even if you’re fit and know what you should be doing it’s easy to caught up in the excitement and fail to exercise common sense and good judgment. Know that you are not the only one in this space of the ocean and communication is key to avoiding collisions and crossing paths with others. If you practice with a more experienced surfer than going out on your own will not be as bad the first time.
