We look at what surfing gear you’ll need in this installment of our how to surf guide.
If you have decided to go surfing then you might think all you need is a surfboard, but your should also consider buying wax and a wetsuit.
A typical surfboard is about 2.7 meters in length and approximately 55-60cm wide. While many kinds of surfboards are available, most are made from polyurethane foam and have a fiberglass coating. It is common to have one fin under the board and an ankle bracelet that will connect you to the board.
A thick, wide board, of a gradual oval type shape, with a rounded tip is the best option for most beginners, as such a one provides the most balance, buoyancy and safety. Before you purchase a board for yourself, it’s advisable to rent or borrow a large variety of boards while you’re learning how to surf, to see which suits you best.
Many surfers will advise you to apply wax, but it is not necessary. Because the surfboard’s surface is already slippery, the addition of water makes the board even more slippery. It is best to rub the wax into areas where your hands and feet will be touching the board.
Depending on where you will be surfing and your natural resistance to the cold water will determine whether or not a wetsuit is necessary. Being continuously exposed to water depletes your body heat more readily when your skin remains wet, even though your body is working very hard while you are surfing.
A wetsuit will keep you warm while you surf, even in very cold water, by retaining a barrier of moisture between your skin and the suit, which is then warmed by your natural body heat. They’re lightweight, highly elastic and don’t impose on your flexibility. Wetsuits are also available to be rented at many popular locations for surfing.
